After all what makes a teacher a successful professional is not what he or she knows, but rather what your students know after you have finished teaching them !!! During the IDC you will learn how to successfully transfer knowledge and skills to others. Furthermore you will develop a clear understanding of The PADI Philosophy of Continuing Education and the full range of PADI programs, teaching materials and tools, especially digital products, that are available to you as a PADI Instructor.

The focus of these programs is on development, in other words learning by making mistakes and being corrected – so feel free to make as many mistakes as you like !!!

In fact, we learn best by making mistakes, then receiving the necessary feedback we need to improve.

The programs are performance based and candidate centred, so you will receive feedback throughout the course informing you of your progress and level of proficiency.

This two and a half day evaluative program is conducted by Examiners from PADI.

To enter the IE you need to have completed an entire IDC / OWSI course within the past 12 months and have logged 100 dives.

Having successfully completed an Indepth IDC or OWSI with Chris you will find there is nothing new expected of you here !!!

You will have 5 Dive Theory exams: Physics, Physiology, The Recreational Dive Planner, Equipment, General Skills and The Diving Environment – yes – exactly the same topics as on your PADI Divemaster Course and IDC / OWSI.

One PADI General Standards and Procedures Exam covering EXACTLY the same material as the one you did on your Assistant Instructor (AI) course and the one we added to our IDC.

One Prescriptive Teaching Knowledge Development presentation, again EXACTLY the same as you did on the IDC.

One Confined Water presentation involving one skill either from the Open Water Course or Rescue Diver Course – yes EXACTLY the same as you practiced on the IDC.

One Open Water presentation with 2 skills, one from the Open Water Course and one from a Continuing Education Course (Adventures, Rescue etc) yes – EXACTLY the same as you did during the IDC !!!

You will do a demonstration of Exercise #7 from the PADI Rescue Diver Course, using Mouth to Pocket Mask or Mouth to Mouth depending on which you have been assigned, EXACTLY as you did during your IDC / OWSI.

You will have a skill circuit of 5 skills taken from the skill circuit performed during the Divemaster Course, Assistant Instructor and IDC / OWSI course.

That’s it … the program is pass or fail.

Once successful, candidates will be certified as PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors (OWSI) and be qualified to teach courses from Open Water up to Divemaster.

DAN offers the world’s most popular oxygen first aid program, launched in 1991. Until DAN developed its oxygen training program and line of oxygen equipment, many injured divers did not benefit from the use of emergency oxygen.

All divers are strongly advised to undergo training in resuscitation and oxygen provision but for diving instructors, dive charter operators, lifeguards and other professionals it is even more important to make sure that the appropriate oxygen equipment and properly trained and qualified staff are available where diving and diver training takes place.

Chris has been a DAN Instructor since 1994 when he became a DAN Oxygen Instructor, since then he has been constantly increasing his DAN Instructor ratings and now holds the following DAN Instructor Trainer ratings:

• DAN Oxygen Provider Instructor Trainer
• DAN First Aid for Hazardous Marine Life Injuries Instructor Trainer
• DAN Automatic External defibrillator Instructor Trainer
• DAN Advanced Oxygen Administration Instructor Trainer

The courses are all one day in duration and the student level certification is a course prerequisite. The student level courses are generally ½ day.

Being a DAN Instructor for of these courses also allows you to apply to PADI for a PADI Distinctive Specialty which counts towards your Master Scuba Diver rating!

Remember the DAN Oxygen Provider is integrated into Chris’s Indepth IDC; the other student level courses can be added into the Instructor Course making them 1 ½ day courses.

The DAN Oxygen Provider Instructor Course 1 Day

This course provides the instructor with the knowledge, skills and understanding to teach the DAN Oxygen Provider Course, which teaches when and how to provide emergency oxygen first aid in the event of a dive accident.

The course focuses on dive injury recognition as well as hands-on practice with actual DAN oxygen units in realistic scenarios and the basic knowledge necessary for the practical administration of oxygen using various delivery systems, including demand, oronasal mask, constant flow and pocket mask.

During the IDC a Recompression Chamber Orientation and Tour is included: this gives all our Instructors the complete picture of how they would manage an Emergency right from when they start administering Oxygen at the site of the incident right through to the arrival at and treatment at the Recompression Chamber.

DAN First Aid for Hazardous Marine Life Instructor Course 1 Day

This course provides the instructor with the knowledge, skills and understanding of the HMLI course structure.

Divers can and do come in contact with various things underwater that can sting, envenomate, bite, poison, or scrape – all of which can cause injury to varying degrees from minor discomfort to life threatening.

During the course your students will learn & practice valuable first aid skills to lessen pain and minimize the risk of infection and serious injury from injuries from creatures such as jellyfish, fish with venomous spines, blue-ringed octopus, sea snakes, fish poisonings etc.

The theory and VCD presentations are supported by practical exercises including bandaging, bleeding control and pressure-immobilisation techniques.

This course is an ideal course to market and promote to divers of all levels especially those at the PADI Rescue Diver level.

DAN Automated External Defibrillation (AED) Instructor Course 1 Day

For some years now AEDs have been appearing in airports, schools, shopping centres, and other public places like the London Underground, and as a result the benefits of these simple machines are becoming more widely recognised world wide.

This course provides the instructor with the knowledge, skills and understanding of the DAN AED course structure and content.

This AED course itself is designed to educate the general diving (and qualified non-diving) public to better recognise the warning signs of Sudden Cardiac Arrest and administer first aid using Basic Life Support techniques and an Automated External Defibrillator while activating the local emergency medical services, and/or arranging for evacuation to the nearest appropriate medical facility.

AED certification and use is becoming more and more important in the world today in a variety of non-diving and diving fields.

In recent years Enriched Air Nitrox (EANx) has become more and more a part of the mainstream recreational dive industry and in fact it can be hard to find a professional operator, whether liveaboard or land based who doesn’t offer EANx (nitrox) !!!

This two day course reviews: the use of Enriched Air Nitrox (EANx) mixtures between 22% and 40% Oxygen, the advantages and disadvantages of diving EANx (nitrox), equipment considerations for EANx (nitrox) managing Oxygen exposure, using the Enriched Air formulas, the correct procedures for analysing and EANx (nitrox) mixtures, and the standards and goals of The PADI Enriched Air Nitrox (EANx) Diver Course.

A prerequisite for this Instructor rating is certification as an EANx (nitrox) diver with a recognised training agency. Those of you not yet certified – don’t worry – the PADI EANx (nitrox) diver course easily can be integrated with the EANx (nitrox) Specialty Instructor course into a two day program.

Included in the price are the EANx (nitrox) tanks necessary to complete your 10 dives necessary for Instructor certification.

Gas Blending (1 day)

As more divers understand the benefits of using nitrox, the need for a ready supply of the gas mix is increasing – last year for example:

More people chose to become a PADI Enriched Air Diver than become a nitrox diver with any other training organization.

Also more divers became certified as PADI Enriched Air Divers than became certified in any other PADI specialty !!!

To provide Nitrox diver training is just not enough – if this is all a Dive Centre or their instructors can offer then their customers will go to their competitors to get their tanks filled with nitrox…… that’s when they might just see the new nitrox computer that they can’t live without, or sign up for that PADI Wreck Specialty they’ve thinking about, that live aboard trip, etc….

The PADI Assistant Instructor Course: 5 days

Assistant Instructor (AI) Candidates joining Chris’s Indepth PADI IDC attend the first 5 days of his Indepth IDC.

This course introduces candidates to learning, instruction and the PADI system of diver education and focuses on the programs they will be able to teach as Assistant Instructors, such as The Project Aware Specialty and the Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty.

Candidates will also learn how to give successful Microteaching Knowledge Development presentations, Confined Water presentations and Open Water presentations.

Certification Requirements include minimum scores in: one Microteaching Knowledge Development presentation, one Confined Water presentation, one Open Water presentation (2 skills), the PADI skill circuit and the Assistant Instructor Standards Exam.

The PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor Course: 6 days

This takes the Assistant Instructor (AI), Instructor with another training organization or person attending a whole IDC program the next step in their PADI Instructor Development. OWSI Candidates joining an Indepth IDC program would attend the only last 6 days.

During the OWSI course you will learn more about PADI Standards and the role of media and prescriptive teaching.

There will be an Indepth look at the courses which make up the PADI system and how to teach them: Discover Scuba Diving, Scuba Diver, Specialty Diver, Adventure Diver, Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, Divemaster and the various diver retention programs as well as important information on teaching children, legal responsibility and risk management and some business principles for YOU – the dive instructor.

Requirements for certification include: a minimum passing score in one Prescriptive Teaching Knowledge Development presentation, one Confined Water presentation, one Open Water presentation (2 skills), the PADI skill circuit, the 800m snorkel swim, the Assistant Instructor Standards Exam and an IE Dive Theory preassessment exam.

Upon successful completion of this program you will receive authorization to attend the Instructor
Examination.

REMEMBER: prior to the start of an IDC, AI or OWSI course the candidate must have completed ALL 16 IDC Knowledge Reviews from the “Independent Learning” section of the IDC Candidate Workbook.

The PADI Instructor Crossover Course is now the OWSI Course

The OWSI course has taken the place of the old IOC / Crossover Course.

The OWSI course now allows Instructors already certified with a recreational diving training agency other than PADI to “crossover” to PADI.

This is a great way to take advantage of market demands and be able to offer your employers and customers PADI courses and programs.

PADI Specialty Instructor Courses consists of minimal classroom time with a look at the course outline, structure and latest standards, student diver and Professional versions of the DVD and a look at the PADI materials followed by the dives themselves.

During the dives we look at how best to arrange the various skills, use the relevant specialty equipment and discuss some valuable tips and tricks you will find useful when teaching these courses. Wreck Diver Specialty Instructor 2 Days

The most wanted PADI specialty course around the world – and one of Chris’s favourite pastimes !

This program covers the course standards, dive planning, organization, and potential hazards of wreck diving. It reviews the preparation and use of lights, air supplies, special equipment, penetration lines and reels, limited-visibility diving techniques and emergency procedures.

It is conducted over two days culminating in an actual penetration dive, conditions and logistics permitting. This is a perfect course on which to utilize the benefits of the extended time offered by nitrox (EANx) diving !!!

Chris spent 6 years working in the Gulf of Siam on Thailand’s East Coast, which is “littered” with wrecks. We used to run three day trips to explore coordinates where Thai fishermen knew there wrecks but no one had dived them.

Chris got to dive a LOT of wrecks in just about every condition from perfect to almost nonexistent and in viz ranging from 30 m to about 30 cm which was great experience for Training Wreck Diving Instructors !!!

Search and Recovery Instructor 1 Day

This is a fun course to teach as it introduces your student divers to many new things; not only rigging and lifting lift bags, but also different knots, general task management underwater and of course search patterns and recovery techniques used in a variety of different situations.

Some of the search patterns used include: circular search, u-pattern, expanding square and jack stay lines and for knots you will be teaching bow lines, sheet bends and half hitches.

This is generally best run from a beach as this gives us much more time in the water itself to set up properly and quite often we schedule this along with the Underwater Navigator Specialty Instructor Course.

A lot of fun to teach as well as fun for your student divers !!

Drift Diver Instructor 1 Day

Maybe it has something to do with my personnel diving history and experience but Chris has done a LOT of drift dives over the years and this was actually the first Specialty Chris took as a diver and then again as a PADI OWSI.

The course teaches your students how to use lines without ending up in a ball of spaghetti at 20 m (hopefully as well as looking at things like organised descents, something which a lot of dive leaders don’t think about until it’s too late, and how you control buoys from depth etc.

A very important course to be able to teach in some locations, and a good specialty to teach regularly to keep your own skills sharp.

Underwater Naturalist Instructor 1 Day

A long time favourite and for many years one of the most popular Adventure Dives from the Advanced Open Water Course (AOW), certainly in this part of the world !

This is a fairly simple course to teach, as long as you have made the effort to learn a little about the environment that you are teaching in and the local marine life you are likely to encounter.

Your student Divers will learn to recognise basic marine life classes and need to recognise some local examples of invertebrates, vertebrates and plant life during the dives.

You will find this a popular Specialty to teach no matter where you are teaching in the world, although I have found over the past 4 or 5 years now that the AWARE – Fish ID course is becoming more popular … but it does depend on how you promote it to your student divers.

How many divers are there out there who love diving but who do NOT want to learn about the underwater environment and the wonderful marine life they are looking at and diving with ???

Dive Propulsion Vehicle Instructor 1 Day

Another Specialty which had been growing in popularity over the past few years after all who has not heard of an Underwater Scooter ???

.. and who has heard of underwater scooters, would love to try one but has never had the chance ???

The answer is probably most of your divers

Highly addictive, all you have to do is start setting one up on the dive deck and see how many people come and watch.

And if you want to see how popular they are just tell everyone at lunch that there will be DPV free if anyone would like to have a go this afternoon and you will find your divers queuing up for a go !!!

Boat Diver Instructor 1 Day

Surprisingly this is quite a popular specialty with certain divers though by no means all.

I have done 90% of my diving from boats and I remember on my Advanced Open Water Course (AOW) thinking why do they offer this course as how else would you dive except from a boat ??

But of course there are plenty areas in the world where 90% of the diving is done from the beach and a boat dive then becomes something special which is only done occasionally or on holidays.

Again as with all standardised Specialty Courses if they have taken the Boat Dive as one of their Adventure Dives then they only need one more dive for the Specialty …

Multi-level Instructor 1 Day

This is another Specialty which sells well in certain areas of the world and not in others in Phuket we sell a lot of these quite often packaged with Deep and wreck.

An ideal Course for “new” divers as it takes them deeper into decompression theory and explains about how tissues load, half times, M values and from that into what is a multi-level dive and then how do dive computers work.

The Similan Islands, Thailand’s best diving, is one of the main destinations for Phuket’s liveaboard fleets and the Similans, where wall diving and pinnacles are the norm, are perfect training grounds for these kind of specialties.

Chances are if you are working in Phuket or Khao Lak and are diving The Similans on a liveaboard you will find yourself teaching this quite often along with Deep, Drift, Night, Fish ID, EANx, DPV etc

Underwater Photographer Instructor 1 Day

Again another of the world’s most sort after Specialty courses, after all who has ever looked underwater at the fish and coral and NOT wanted to take photos to show their friends ???

Not many …

This course is a GREAT introduction into underwater photography !!!

It will NOT make you a professional underwater photographer overnight of course but it is great introduction into the world of underwear photography with excellent support materials: DVD, professional version of the DVD, manual all of which remain as popular as ever.

NOTE: as underwater photography does vary to an extent depending on what camera you are using it is very much encouraged to use your own camera – if you don’t have one then no problem we will be able to rent you one.

Underwater Navigator Instructor 1 Day

How many times have you got lost underwater and had to surface “just to check that the boat is over there” ???

If you were anything like me quite a few times is the honest answer to that ?

There is nothing difficult about learning to navigate underwater it does however take time, patience, good buoyancy control and guidance from a PADI professional which is where you and this course come in.

This is a good specialty to teach as you will find that like good buoyancy control, navigation skills are something that “regular divers” are always jealous of and are always asking the divemaster and instructors . “How do you do it ??”

It does take a bit to organise this course and set up so this is another specialty which is best taught off the beach (in a Phuket setting anyway), this way you are not pushed for time by having to be back on board before the boat moves etc.

Again as it is a Core Dive from the Advanced Open Water Course (AOW) it is a popular one and which you future students will ask you about.

Night Diver Instructor 1 Day

Do you remember your first night dive ???

If you said no I wouldn’t believe you

Chris will never forget his first night dive, although looking back 15 years later it was a pretty lousy dive in about 4 m of water, 1-2 m visibility and nothing to see apart from one blue spotted ray, but it was my first night dive and I thought it was absolutely FANTASTIC and I didn’t stop talking about it for about a week.

You will find a great demand for this all round the world as Night Diving is something which everyone wants to know about; whether you love it, hate it or just want to try it you will find a lot of interest in this course.

Working in Phuket you will find this another popular Specialty to teach especially working out at the Similan Islands . because with Night Dives scheduled daily on liveaboards there is a more of less never ending supply of first time night divers.

It has always been on of my favourite types of diving.

Deep Diver Specialty Instructor course 2 Days

This program covers the course standards, dive planning, organization, and potential hazards of deep diving and trains the diver to the recreational diving limit of 40 metres.

As part of your Open Water Training we will go through the preparation and use of emergency decompression techniques, the deployment of “drop tanks”, managing air supplies, special equipment including descent lines and reels, conservative diving practices and computer use.

You’d be surprised how many Instructors have had very little experience handling lines, managing narcosis, etc again Chris will be in the water with you ensuring that all “goes according to plan”

This is another popular Specialty Instructor Course as not only do a lot of people like going deep, but as the Deep Dive is a core dive from the Advanced Open Water Course (AOW), if you can teach the Deep Specialty, you will find a lot of your student divers go onto complete the Deep Specialty with you!

During the dives you will look at Nitrogen Narcosis, Pressure affected objects, Colours and Emergency Decompression Procedures.

AED Instructor – Distinctive Specialty 1 Day

As a DAN AED Instructor you are able to then apply directly to PADI for the PADI AED Distinctive Specialty Instructor qualification.

The PADI Advanced Open Water Course:

The Advanced Open Water Diver is awarded to Adventure Divers or Open Water divers who have completed
a total of 5 Adventure dives in 5 different speciality areas.

It runs over two days or can be used as a one day program to “upgrade” Adventure Divers.

Of the 5 Adventure Dives one must be the Deep dive and another the Underwater Navigation dive.

With PADI Specialty Training PADI offers divers the chance to broaden their diving knowledge and skills in areas which interest them the most.

The PADI Rescue Diver Course:

So now you want to be able to help people ????

Often descried as the “most fun I’ve had being serious” this PADI program develops your knowledge and skills so you can effectively perform diver assists and rescues, manage diving accident situations and render the appropriate First Aid.

The program is an important step in expanding your knowledge and experience as a diver.

The course consists of 10 exercises in Open Water that culminates in 4 Rescue Scenarios combining the various exercises into realistic rescue scenarios.

These are usually run over two days following a day of Knowledge Development and Pool work.

Exercises include: panicked diver on the surface, tired diver on the surface, distressed diver underwater, missing diver, surfacing the unconscious diver, egress with the unconscious diver etc.

Prior to certification you will also need to have successfully completed the Emergency First Response Primary / Secondary Care course or a sanctioned program in CPR and First Aid within the past two years.

PADI Rescue Diver certification is also a prerequisite for all PADI leadership programs.

This is a fully comprehensive First Aid course – recognised world-wide – for divers and non-divers alike.

This eight hour course consists of video, lecture, and actual hands on practical work, showing you how to respond if someone needs help.

You’ll learn about CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), basic first aid and other emergency response procedures – many used by emergency care professionals but at a layman’s level.

The chances are, you won’t ever need to use the range of skills presented in this Medic First Aid course, however should the need arise to provide emergency medical attention, you’ll have the knowledge to respond quickly – and with confidence !!!

Discover Scuba for Kids: if you’re eight or nine years of age, here is your chance to take the plunge with a PADI Instructor and Go Diving !!!

This program is similar to Discover Diving, expect it is specifically for kids.

This is an ideal program for kids with diving parents who wish to get their kids diving or even to take their kids out on the boat diving with them.

Seal Team:

The PADI Seal Team is for young divers who are looking for an action-packed, adventurous program filled with exciting scuba “AquaMissions.”

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to dive with flashlights, take pictures underwater or float effortlessly like an Astronaut? If you have, this is your chance to explore these exciting adventures in a swimming pool.

As a PADI Seal, you learn the basics of safe diving and explore different AquaMissions – or specialty dives -like buoyancy, underwater photography, environmental awareness and more.

What’s an AquaMission? It’s an underwater pool adventure where kids learn scuba activities. Take AquaMission: Inner Space Specialist for example, here kids learn how to float underwater like an Astronaut. And AquaMission: Snapshot Specialist, this is where PADI Seal Team members take pictures of each other scuba diving.

Supported by a video, manual and logbook, the PADI Seal Team program is a great way for kids to share the excitement and wonder of diving yet in a controlled environment.

Once they’re 10 years old they’re ready for their Junior Open Water Course or Scuba Diver Course !!!

Discover Scuba Diving:

4,900 THB – two boat dives including meals, round trip transfer from our contract hotels and diving equipment. Availability: DAILY Minimum age: 10 years old Prerequisite Certification: None Duration: 1 or 1 ½ days

Here you not only get to dive in the pool but also you go diving in the sea with the fish and coral !!!

You have the choice of diving from the beach in the morning or afternoon or going out on the boat for the day and diving some of the more adventurous dive sites all with your instructor of course

This exciting program allows anyone over 10 to safely experience the thrill and excitement of breathing underwater – diving both in a pool or off the beach and also from a boat at some of Phuket’s finest dive sites.

In the pool or shallow water just off the beach you’ll master some basic concepts and scuba skills before heading off on an actual open water dive in the sea with your instructor.

The Open Water dives can be conducted from a boat or at one of our house reefs, so you will not only get to dive in a pool but also out in the sea with the fish and the coral !!!.

AND …… having completed this program you will gain credit for both your pool and open water dives – meaning that you will already have taken the first part of your Scuba Diver or Open Water Course.

Discover Snorkelling:

This experience program is your ticket to the action-packed underwater world. With tips and suggestions on how to make the most of your snorkelling adventures, this program is based on three simple principles:

1. You snorkel because you want to see and interact with the underwater world

2. Snorkelling is a great adventure

3. The whole family can do it – No minimum age requirements !!!

Participants may learn in our pool or may go directly into the sea, again either from the beach or a boat or out at the islands.

It’s a great way to learn about the local sites and local environment !!!

Skin Diver Course:

Have you ever snorkelled but somehow that just didn’t get you close enough to the fish or the coral ???

If so the The PADI Skin Diver Course is for you ! During this program you’ll learn about the equipment, the environment and specific information about skin diving here in Phuket.

You’ll also practice techniques of breath hold skin diving, entering the water, checking your buoyancy, surface swimming, and snorkel clearing.

It will build your confidence in your skin diving abilities and help you to explore the mysteries of the aquatic realm.

Taking place in both the pool and the open water, The PADI Skin Diver program is an is an excellent pretraining experience for children who want to explore the possibilities but are too young to dive with scuba or before trying the PADI Bubble maker or Seal Team programs.

This also can be credited to the Skin Dive on your Scuba Diver or Open Water Course !!!

Scuba Diver:

Remember: if you have already completed a Discover Scuba Diving program you have already done the first Confined Water Dive and your first Open Water Dive !!!

This two day course is perfect for those thinking of getting certified but who don’t have the time as it allows you to dive with a PADI Divemaster or other dive professional !!

The PADI Scuba Diver program is a pre-entry level certification that is perfect for holidaymakers short on time or people who only plan to dive a couple of times a year.

The course consists of some pool dives, Knowledge Development sessions and two open water dives out on the boat or off the shore.

It is a subprogram of the PADI Open Water Diver Course, allowing you to gain a limited certification quickly and easily by minimising time constraints allowing you to dive under the direct supervision of a PADI Divemaster, Assistant Instructor or Instructor

As a PADI Scuba Diver you are certified for life to dive with under the supervision of a PADI professional.

By the way – all you need to do to Upgrade to “Full Open Water” is to complete the last two days of the Open Water Course … !!! … or you can happily remain a Scuba Diver and still dive under supervision whenever you wish !!

The PADI Open Water Course:

This is PADI’s entry-level diver certification course and is the most sort after entry-level course in the world; more people have become divers with this course than any other.

During this four day course you’ll learn the basic knowledge and skills necessary to dive safely. The course consists of two days pool dives and Knowledge Development and two days diving out at the islands conducting four open water dives.

Upon completion of this course you will have earnt The PADI Open Water Diver certification and be qualified to rent equipment and conduct dives independent of a professional up to a depth of 18 meters anywhere in the world…
